Sultanate Takes Steps To Improve Standards

Bandar Seri Begawan – His Majesty's government has allocated more than $9 million in the National Development Plan in implementing the standard of Small and Medium Entrepreneurs Accreditation Programme.

The Director of Resource and Standard, Awang Haji Abdul Rahman raised the matter at the signing of contract of the Standard Consultation Project between the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources and Sirim Sendirian Berhad, Malaysia.

Awang Haji Abdul Rahman, went on to say that realising the process of certification and quality control needs high cost.

Such cost, he added, will become a burden for small entrepreneurs to operate and hard for them to get such certification standard that they required.

Awang Haji Abdul Rahman also stressed that the budget, which have been allocated, shows the government's continuous commitment in ensuring Small and Medium Entrepreneurs could develop and sustain in the economic field, which is affected by current competitive globalization process.

He further mentioned, the entrepreneurs’ development programmes, which have been focused, will be meaningless if Small and Medium Entrepreneurs will not take a pro-active step to grab such opportunity.

The government, he said is only act as the facilitator but it is up to the entrepreneurs to play their role in creating and developing economic activities in line with its role as the nation's economic indicator.

Meanwhile, the President and Head of Executive of Sirim Berhad, Malaysia, Dato Dr Mohd Ariffin in his speech, noted that the joint development programmes should be focused not only on technological field but also on quality and productivity.

This is mainly to develop entrepreneurs, who have the knowledge and skills in the challenging business era.

The signing of contracts covered the engagements of consultants for enhancing the Quality and Standards Program in Brunei.

It is also aimed at intensifying the abilities of the Resource and Standards Centre to act as a Quality and Accreditation Centre for local products.  -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
