Four Youth School Leavers Jailed For Theft

Bandar Seri Begawan - Four youngsters aged between 18 and 21 years old will serve their jail sentences commencing today, as ordered by Senior Magistrate Hj Abdullah Soefri, after the four were convicted of theft charges yesterday.

Abdul Rasid Hj Libut, 18, was sentenced to a total of 33 months imprisonment with 2 strokes of the cane, Md Zulnizam Zulkifli, 20, was handed an 18-month jail term, while Kusnady Halawi, 19, and Md Amir Zuki Md Yassin, 21, were sentenced to 6 months in custody.

When asked by the Magistrate's why they committed the offence, all the school leavers said that they needed money, which they got from selling the stolen items, to buy their own food to eat.

According to the Attorney General's Chambers prosecuting officer, Dk Hjh Hana Molina Pg Hj Mohammad, all the offences were committed this year. Abdul Rasid faced six charges, Zulnizam three charges, while Kusnady and Md Amir faced one charge each. They pleaded guilty to all the charges.

Abdul Rasid was first sentenced to six months imprisonment along with the three others after they pleaded guilty to committing theft of one Pioneer DVD video player, one Aiwa LD player, one Aiwa portable television set, two Kicker woofer speakers and a set of MB Quartz speaker.

All the items belonged to Ak Rosman Pg Hj Hashim and were taken from a house in Perumahan Rakyat Jati in Kampong Rimba Gadong.

Magistrate Hj Abdullah then sentenced Abdul Rasid and Md Zulnizam to six months jail for stealing five gas cylinders belonging to Hj Libut Hj Mohd Yussof, which they committed on March 13 also from a house in Kampong Rimba.

Another six months in custody was imposed on both Abdul Rasid and Md Zulnizam after they pleaded guilty to committing the theft of one Aifa television set belonging to Hjh Mae Rahimah Hj Abdullah from a house in Kg Bunut.

Abdul Rasid then got another six months imprisonment sentence after he pleaded guilty to committing theft of one Sony Hi-Fi speaker, one set of Playstation (PS2) and a Sony video tape belonging to Mohd Afdzillah Hj Mohd Yussof, from a house in Kampong Rimba.

Taking into account the seriousness of the offence committed by Abdul Rasid, who caused wrongful damage to Mohd Afdzillah's sliding window, the Magistrate's sentenced him to six months imprisonment and two strokes.

Abdul Rasid then was sentenced to another six-month jail term after he pleaded guilty to dishonestly misappropriating a Mitsubishi Galant car with the registration number BM 538, belonging to Rosnani Hj Md Yussof.  -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
