Promoting road safety
By Achong Tanjong
Efforts by relevant law agencies
especially the Police and Land Transport Department in conducting road
safety talks in schools are very much appreciated by parents as well
as teachers. One of the parents said, such talks would give an early
exposure to students on the understanding and importance of basic
roads safety aspects at an early age.
"Knowing road safety should be
made a culture among road users adding that if the gist of this
culture is being adhered by all, I am sure there will be less cases of
accident occurring each day," he said when asked to comment on
efforts made by the law authorities.
Not only students but teachers and
parents also benefited from the talks as everyone has a responsibility
to ensure safety at all times.
The Police and Land Transport
Department has been conducting talks in schools throughout the country
aiming to increase understanding and promote awareness of road safety
issues. Among the many issues and topics highlighted during the talks
were common cause of road accidents - especially the use of short
messaging system (SMS) while driving, road safety law and regulations,
procedures relating to obtaining a drivers license and other essential
information every road user should be made aware of.
Meanwhile, the Fire Services
Department apart from giving talks to Hotels staff also conducted
similar talks to schools in the country focusing on Fire Safety
Measures.
Recently, personnel from the
department held a talk to staff members of Ehsan Centre in Kg.
Bengkurong Masin.
The seminar objective was to create
awareness about appropriate measures to be taken should fires break
out. It is also to enhance the knowledge about the causes of fire and
information on how to use fire extinguishers.
Meanwhile, it was reported at RTB
this morning that a total of 27 road accident cases have been reported
at Police stations throughout the country in past weeks.
Of that number, 15 cases involved
vehicle to vehicle accidents and 12 involved self-accidents. From the
total number of accidents reported one person received serious injury
and 9 people received slight injuries.
Topping the list in the number of
accidents reported was the Brunei-Muara district with 19 cases, three
cases in Tutong district and five cases reported in Belait district.
No accident cases were reported in Temburong district.
