The Brunei Darussalam Women's Institute will organise several competitions in conjunction with His Majesty The Sultan And Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam's 57th birthday celebrations.

This was further explained by Datin Hjh Masni bte Hj Ali, Adviser of Brunei Darussalam Women's Institute during the press briefing at the Information Department. Datin Hjh Masni explained that the essay writing competition is about environment aspects and is divided into four categories. The competition is open to higher education institutions and adults.

Category A is for upper secondary and Sixth Form Centre students, category B is for students at vocational colleges and UBD, category C is for women's and youth members registered association, and category D is for the public.

Number of words in the essay depends on each category, such as category A: 500 words, category B: 1000 words, category C: 1500 words and category D: 1750 words. The essay must be original script in Standard Malay language or English language.

Dyg Kim Hon bte Bangau, representative from the Director of Environment Department meanwhile explained about the "cleanliness and landscape" competition. This competition is divided into 3 categories, namely "villages on land", "National Housing Scheme" and "water villages".

One of the objectives in introducing this type of competition is to promote harmony amongst one another and to encourage responsible individuals in upgrading and maintaining cleanliness, particularly at their respective villages. The 2-month-long competition will commence June 2003.

As usual in previous years, Brunei Darussalam Women's Institute will also organise a live flower competition. This was also explained by Dyg Hjh Mahani bte Abdul Latif, President of the Brunei Darussalam Women's Institute. Foreign representatives in the Sultanate are also invited to participate in the competition.

Among the objectives in organising this competition is to encourage the public involvement in preserving the cleanliness of the environment. It is hoped that it would create awareness about the protection of the environment.

Also present at the meeting was the Acting Director of Information Department, Awg Hj Bujang bin Hj Masu'ut.

Entry forms can be obtained from the Information Department and Brunei-Muara District counters. For further information about the competition the public may contact Hjh Shamsiah bte Abdul Latif, Secretary General of the Brunei Darussalam Women's Institute, at 2381989 or 8753553.
