St James
School in Jalan McKerron, Kuala Belait held its biannual Sports Day
2003 last Saturday April 26 at the Mumong Sports Complex. Pg Hj
Metassan bin Pg Hj Jumat, Assistant Director of Co-Curriculum
Department, Ministry of Education was the chief guest at the event.
Even though it rained for several minutes during the event, the spirit
of the participants were not dampened. The rain fuelled more
excitement and challenges to win the Champion House Trophy.
The event showcased a lot of
interesting activities. The opening ceremony received a lot of
praises, as it resembled major sports event like the SEA Games and the
Olympics with high flying flags and torch run.
The torch run was led by Hj Mohd
Firdaus bin Hj Derius who passed it on to the next house caption
waiting on the track. Tina Osman, a leading female tennis player in
Brunei, carried the final torch run.
Pg Hj Metassan was given the honour
of lighting up the ceremonial sports torch.
The cheerleading competition being
the last event drew the most crowd, as every spectator was delighted
to watch the acrobatic and dancing skills of the students.
The audience stayed till the last
hour to watch it as it was worth the wait. The lively music, the
synchronised and graceful movements of the Blue House Cheerleading
Group won the nod of approval from the board of judges.
Another event worth watching was the
Marching Competition where all the Houses with members ranging from 6
years old to 16 years old marched in solidarity representing their
house colours. Every house resorted to various gimmicks such as using
colourful balloons, wearing caps and carrying flags. Red House was
declared as the champion in the Marching Competition.
The Yellow House dominated the
athletic event but early games such as football and tug of war placed
them in second position. Hence the overall house champion went to the
Blue House.
The school principal, Cikgu Haji
Abdullah bin Othman thanked all staff and parents who volunteered to
help for the success of the school's biannual Sports Day 2003.
