By Abdul Aziz Pandin & Hjh Noorizan BPK Hj Abd Wahid

Bandar Seri Begawan - The three-day motivational camp organised by Sayyidina Umar Al-Khattab Secondary School (SMSUA), Mukim Lumapas, came to an end yesterday.

The school principal, Cikgu Hj Juma'at bin Salleh, in his speech said the main objectives of the camping were to build up students' self-motivation, confidence and leadership quality, to make full use of their holiday for beneficial activities and to strengthen relationships between the participants and teachers.

He added that various activities were arranged such as religious, cultural and game activities as well as group presentation to help enhance the stamina and capability of the students in handling problem solving.

He also congratulated all teachers involved in successfully organising the motivational camp and applauded the teachers' willingness to stay overnight and away from home throughout the camping period.

Present as the guest of honour during the closing ceremony was Awg Hj Hamdani bin Hj Alias, Head of Counselling Department, Career and Counselling Unit, Ministry of Education.

In his speech he commended the teachers and students for sacrificing their school holidays for beneficial activities. He added that in order to succeed in life academically, one must work hard such as attending extra classes especially for subjects like mathematics, science, English and Malay languages.

He also advised the students to manage and use their time wisely. He then presented certificates to the participants.

Later he toured the camp areas for both male and female. Parents also took the opportunity to tour the camp areas.

Throughout the three-day camping, the students did various activities to mould their personal development to be more pro-active, outspoken and creative.

During the motivational talk, the invited speaker, Hjh Rokayah binti Hj Tawe, a counsellor from the Career and Counselling Unit, Department of Schools, Ministry of Education emphasised on effective communication among students as well as teachers. Later that day, participants attended a talk on selfmotivation from the school counsellors, Cikgu Merliani binti Murah and Cikgu Alwany binti Hj Abd Wahab.

Meanwhile in the afternoon, the participants challenged their senses such as touch, taste, hearing and sight in the "Bes-Bes Game". Each group was given materials to guess by using their senses and at the end of the game they had to write down what they have sensed.

The event continued last night with cultural performances from each group. Participants unleashed their creativities, talents, charisma and confidence in choreographing dances, acting in short drama, poetry reading, playing musical instruments and singing. The performances were entertaining and reflected the lives of teenagers today.

On the last day, the participants' mental and physical strength were put to the test as they conducted an arduous trekking of Bukit Seah located around Mukim Lumapas. The activity that lasted for about three hours had strengthened the participants' teamwork and communication. Apart from that, the students also successfully reached to the top of the hill, which is over 3,000 metres.

The students were happy with the camping activities and hoped that such activities will be organised again. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
