Spot The Diagnosis Clinical
Session
By Zasika Musdi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - A Spot the Diagnosis' interactive clinical session
was organized yesterday for doctors, medical students and nursing
staff by the Institute of Medicine, Universiti Brunei Darussalam.
This first collaboration between
the Institute of Medicine and Tan Tock Seng Hospital, Singapore
aimed to enhance knowledge and clinical skills of participants.
The non-trauma (rashes,
conjunctivitis) session was delivered by Dr Lee Ching Ching. The
trauma session (injuries due to motor vehicle collision, cervical
spine injuries) was delivered by Dr Vivian Sin. Both are registrars
from the Emergency Department at Tan lock Seng Hospital, Singapore.
Participants identified the
conditions and the right course of action within a short period of
time for lecturers to see if they were capable of making quick
management decisions and actions.
Over the past few years,
professionals from the Accident and Emergency medical services in
Brunei Darussalam have been trained and accredited at Tan Tock Seng
Hospital, Singapore General Hospital and National University
Hospital, Singapore.
This close collaboration enables
the professionals from both countries to share their knowledge on
current medical technicalities, said Dr Ang Sweet Hui, Specialist
and Head of Department, Accident and Emergency Department, RIPAS
Hospital, Ministry of Health. He said 105,000 patients go to the
emergency ward per year. Seventy per cent (seven out of 10) are
Priority three cases (minor cases such as headaches and stomach
bugs), and 30 per cent (three out of 10) are Priority one and two
cases (major cases such as strokes and accidents).
"We cannot give all the patients
the same kind of medical attention as it depends on the severity of
their disposition, but we do try our best to treat each patient the
best way we can," he said. -- Courtesy of Borneo
