Local Organization To Help
Identify IT Talent
By Nasroul Hizam
Bandar Seri
Begawan - With an increasing demand for IT specialists in
Brunei, a non-profit IT organisation is aiming to make Bruneians
more marketable in the local and international market.
Mohd
Haziq Kenny Wong Abdullah, a member of Infocom Federation Brunei's (IFB)
executive council, highlighted the need for reducing dependence on
overseas experts and to start drawing from untapped local human
resources.
During a briefing with potential
recruiters at the Ministry of Finance, the IFB will offer a solution
to Brunei Darussalam's IT woes with the organising of Brunei ICT
Career Day scheduled for May 3 to 4, 2008 at the International
Convention Centre.
The first of its kind to be held, a
flagship event organised by the non-profit organisation and
supported by both government agencies and private bodies, with the
intention of producing local IT professionals to support
e-government initiatives.
Another objective of the event is
to bring ICT education service providers and ICT professional
recruiters together under one roof to help interested locals meet up
with potential employers.
With exhibitions and ample chances
for walk-in interviews, the open concept of the ICT Career Day would
allow interested visitors to ask questions and even submit their
applications to the recruiters.
In addition, those who are
interested in obtaining IT certifications can also enquire on
courses that are available.
The IFB hopes that with the success
of the event, Brunei would then be able to have a reliable ICT
professional database to cater to those in need of specialists.
It would also be able to allow the
organisation to compile analytical reports, including the need for
ICT professional skills, and recommendations of introducing
applicable ICT courses in higher learning institutions to meet the
career demand in the ICT industry.
Pg Sarimah Pg Haji Abd Latiff,
secretariat of IFB, explained that the event is targeted at both
fresh graduates interested in IT careers, as well as current IT
professionals looking for better opportunities. Sheikh Abas Sheikh
Mohamad stressed the need for creating pathways for future
generations and opens up avenues for employment and builds a
substantial pool of local IT professionals.
A potential recruiter voiced out
how there is a need for a give and take relationship between the IFB
and employers where there should be sharing of information.
Based on her experience, another
recruiter professed the need for certified and skilled people but
the main problem is finding the "right people" for the job.
Locals, regardless of their
knowledge and certification, still need experience and exposure to
be on the same playing field as their foreign counterparts, she
added.-- Courtesy of
