By Aemy Azlena

Bandar Seri Begawan - The third Crown Prince CIPTA Award 2009 Competition was launched yesterday at the Institut Teknologi Brunei (ITB).

Present as guest of honour to launch the 2009 CIPTA competition was Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.

Director of ITB, Dr Hj Kassim Hj Daud, who is also Executive Chairperson of the competition, gave the welcoming remarks.

A brief multimedia presentation on the competition and background of the award was also held.

This was followed by the presentation of mock cheques by sponsors Brunei LNG and Standard Chartered Bank. Representing BLNG in presenting a $40,000 mock cheque was its Senior General Manager, Hj Matsatejo Sokiaw, while representing Standard Chartered Bank in presenting $20,000 worth of sponsorship (also a mock cheque) was its Chief Executive Officer, Tiew Siew Chuen.

There was also an exhibition of inventions and innovations by previous CIPTA participants, ITB student projects and projects from Technical Colleges and Vocational Schools.

CIPTA, which stands for Creative, Innovative Products and Technological Advancements, is a competition that is open to the general public, including locals, permanent residents and foreign residents, as well as staff members and students of schools and technical or higher learning institutions from both the government and private sectors.

The objectives of C1PTA are to; inspire youth and public to develop creative products, processes or technology for national aspirations; encourage inventions and innovations in Brunei Darussalam; award and recognise creative talents in the country; promote the development of manufacturing processes and technological products in Brunei Darussalam.

The competition has produced a number of inventions and innovations since it first started in 2005 and the participation in the previous two CIPTA competitions was reportedly very encouraging.

The competition has two categories; category 1 is for new products, processes or technologies, while category 2 is for creative modifications to any existing inventions or processes that improve or enhance their function or quality.

All work must be original and have never been entered in any other competition or received any award. Winners will receive trophies or certificates and cash prizes of up to $10,000.

For more information and the competition's application form, log onto www.itb.edu.bnicipta2009/default.asp. The closing date for submissions is October 15, 2008. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
