Indonesia Human Rights Body Meets
On Myanmar
By Ben Ng
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Indonesia's Human Rights Working Group (HRWG) along
with the Indonesia Coalition for Burma (KMSUB) are holding an
international conference focused on Burma's human rights policies
following last year's monk-led uprising that sparked violence across
the nation.
The talks that kicked off yesterday
in Jakarta is focused on the role of Asean civil society in
supporting human rights and democracy in Burma, following urgent
appeals to the Human Rights Council that resulted in a written and
oral statement delivered to the HRC regarding Burma, which was
co-sponsored by 243 human rights organisations, including'] 6 NGO's
with ECOSOC consultative status.
Since the September 2007 monk-led
uprising in Burma, Indonesian CSO's have displayed an increased
solidarity with Burma. The movement involves not only human rights
groups, but also interfaith groups. Indonesian Buddhist
associations, youth organisations from Muhammadiyah, migrant worker
organisations, journalists, labour/trade unions are among a few of
them.
Immediately after the bloody
repression of the saffron revolution, Indonesian CSOs from different
sectors organised solidarity activities protesting the violent
repression of the peaceful actions of monks and other members of
Burmese civil society.
Various public meetings and
demonstrations were organised involving, among others, interfaith
groups, youth organisations, students and trade unions. As a result,
Indonesian CSO's became seriously concerned with the victims of
human rights violations in Burma despite the fact that Indonesia is
itself, still in the process of trying to deal with a lot of
significant internal unresolved human rights violations. -- Courtesy of Borneo
