‘Xibit’ Features Unsung Local
Comic Artists
By P Marilyn
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Works of various cartoonists and manga artists in
Brunei will be featured in a comic book entitled Xibit, a
combination of the two different styles as the latest addition to
the local art scene.
Mohd
Denny Azriman bin Hj Madni also known as Ambuyart, one of the nine
contributing artists/cartoonists for Xibit spoke to the Bulletin
yesterday on the idea and reason behind the development of the comic
book.
"Xibit is a personal project among
nine various talented artists/cartoonists in Brunei, comprised
mostly of illustrators and two students from International School
Brunei (ISB)," he said.
When asked how the idea to create a
comic book came about, Denny said, "The idea began when I noticed
that there are many unrecognised artistic talents in Brunei. Some
made it, while others needed a platform to showcase their creative
works to the public," said Mohd Denny.
"Through Xibit, we are turning our
hobby into a more serious thing. We want to show that there are
talented artists in Brunei. If not, these talents might just go to
waste.
"Most people just display their
artwork on websites and not everyone gets to see how impressive
their works are," he added
"It took us two months to gather
all materials. We each came up with our own idea, storyline, colours
and graphics. We also used different mediums such as watercolor and
Photoshop."
Working as an illustrator himself
at Brunei Press Sdn Bhd, Denny developed an interest in cartooning
since he was in primary school.
He began doing freelance work for
Borneo Bulletin, Media Permata and Majalah Juara after completing
his 'A' Levels before joining Brunei Press permanently in 2006.
The first issue of Xibit will be
out for sale today at the Brunei Book Fair at the International
Convention Centre in Berakas after 4.30pm.
