BEDB Briefs Vietnam Visitors
By Debbie Too
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The Brunei Economic Development Board (BEDB)
yesterday briefed the Vice-President of Socialist Republic of
Vietnam, Truong My Hoa on the business opportunities and development
projects that Brunei is planning. The presentation was delivered by
BEDB Acting Chairman, Dato Paduka Timothy Ong.
"The response from the Vietnamese
delegation was quite positive, the presentation was well-received
and they saw the opportunity that Brunei has to offer," said a BEBD
representative-who wished to remain anonymous.
The presentation, he said, included
BEDB's plans to create more opportunities by setting up a fertiliser
plant and an aluminium plant.
He said Dato Paduka Timothy Ong
also briefed the visiting delegation on the upcoming methanol plant
that will be opening up in Sungai Liang and the Pulau Muara Besar
Port project.
Since the publication of the BEDB's
two-pronged strategy in January 2003, the BEDB has actively marketed
Brunei Darussalam as an investment destination to prospective
investors overseas.
These efforts have resulted in the
signing of a number of Memorandum of Understanding (MoUs) which will
lead to the achievement of the BEDB's dual objectives of attracting
US$ 4.5 billion in foreign direct investments (FDI) and creating
6,000 new jobs by 2008.
Key to the BEDB's strategy is the
development of Sungai Liang into a world class industrial site for
petrochemical and manufacturing industries that will capitalise on
Brunei Darussalam's proven gas reserves.
"The Vietnamese Vice President saw
a lot, of opportunities in terms of exporting their labour and
expertise as well," he said.
He said the Vietnamese Labour
Minister who was present at the briefing and presentation by the
Economic Planning and Development Board on per capita income
commented that Brunei and Vietnam have much to offer to Asean. -- Courtesy of
