Vietnam Vice President Visits Brunei Museum

Bandar Seri Begawan - Madame Truong My Hoa, Vice President of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, and her delegation visited the Brunei Museum yesterday morning.

Brunei's largest museum, opened in 1972, lies four kilometres outside Bandar Seri Begawan, and sits on a hill at Kota Batu, an important archaeological site.

Accompanying the vice president were Pehin Dato Paduka Hj Hazair bin Hj Abdullah, Deputy Minister of Health, Hj Ahmad bin Hj Abdul Rahman and other government officials.

Present -to welcome her were Hj Ahmad bin Hj Abd Rahman, Deputy Permanent Secretary of Culture, Youth and Sport, Bantong bin Antaran, Acting Director of Museum Department, Pg Dr Karim bin Pg Hj Osman, Acting Deputy Director of Museum Department.

Madame Truong My Hoa toured the Islamic Arts Gallery, which houses the collection of His Majesty the Sultan and the Yang Di-Pertuan of Negara Brunei Darussalam.

The collection comprises of a wide range of objects covering the artistic production of the various Islamic regions from the transitional and early Islamic periods to the late 19th century, and all aspects of religious and daily life.

At the Brunei Culture Gallery, the vice president viewed the customs and culture of the Brunei people, from the time of birth till marriage.

There is also a fine collection of Brunei brassware especially cannons.

In the Brunei Archaeology and History Gallery, the vice president saw exhibits that told the history of Brunei Darussalam starting from the prehistoric period up to independence in 1984.

The displays also provided information on historical events using the chronological order of the Sultanate's rulers as a framework.

Concluding the visit the vice president toured the Sunken Treasure Gallery. She viewed a display of porcelain, pots and bowls from a sunken ship.

Before leaving for a visit to Kampong Ayer, the Water Village on the Brunei River, the vice president exchanged souvenirs with the Acting Deputy Director of Museum Department.-- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
