Fun And Education At Youth Adoption Programme 2007
By Amin Hosni

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Youth Adoption Programme, which used to be known as Educational Visit to Youth and Sports Department, was first held in 2003. The programme receives encouragement from schools and parents, and once again, the Youth Section has added special activities during the first-term school holidays. In 2006, the programme could not be completed due to the outbreak of hand, foot and mouth disease.

In 2003, participants were from primary schools from rural areas in Brunei-Muara District, whereas in 2006, the Youth and Sports Department invited primary school students from the rural areas of Belait and Temburong Districts.

The format remains mostly unchanged and continues to live with foster families, consisting of officers and staff members from the Youth and Sports Department. The period is extended to five days.

It is hoped that the visit will change the personal attitudes and personalities of the participants, in view of their impending adulthood, besides stirring their interests in youth and sports affairs. It is also hoped that the visit will provide benefits to the students.

The objective of the programme is to give in ft rmation concerning the use and the functions of the youth centre and sports complex, and to fill the school holidays with useful activities.

The programme is open only to students, both citizens and permanent residents, who are studying in government primary schools, especially in rural areas of Belait and Tutong Districts. Each school is only allowed to send one group, comprising five boys and girls. Ages should be 11 years old and above, from Primary Six and Fonn One.

As many as 49 students are participating in the Youth Adoption Programme.

The activities began on March 20 and will end on March 24.

The visits include places such as the headquarters of the Youth and Sports Department located at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, Anggerek Desa Swimming Pool, Indoor Stadium, Lawn Bowling Sports Complex, Al-Islah Drugs Rehabilitation Centre, the Language and Literature Bureau, Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, and many more. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
