Crackling Sound In High-Rise
Building Triggers Panic
By Yusrin Junaidi
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The crackling sound of tiles on the top floor of
one of the high-rise buildings in the capital triggered a brief
panic as people attending a function ran down the emergency stairs.
According to one of the building's
security guards, it was quite chaotic as people rushed towards the
emergency exits after the floor tiles they stepped on cracked.
Six Fire and Rescue Department
personnel from Operation A and five from Special Squad, led by DSO
Abd Rahman and DSO Md Saifuddin respectively, rushed to the scene.
The Police from Bandar Seri Begawan
also arrived at the scene and followed the safety procedure by
closing the stretch of road along the Kianggeh area, where the
building is located.
Hj
Ahmad bin Hj Mohd Daud, Commanding Officer `A' Command and Acting
Senior Superintendent of Fire and Rescue, said according to JKR the
cause of the crackling sound was due to the build up of air beneath
the floor, which led to the tiles being raised and eventually break
when people stepped on them.
"The building is safe and we didn't
find any need to evacuate it," added Hj Ahmad. -- Courtesy of Borneo
