Surprise Royal Visit To DBP

Bandar Seri Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei yesterday morning made a surprise visit to the Dewan Bahasa dan Pustaka (DBP) in Berakas.

With its goal to improve and promote the use of Malay Language as the official language of Brunei, DBP is responsible to build and develop Malay literature as well as provide documentation and publish books.

His Majesty First inspected the Administration and Operation Section of DBP that comprises Finance, Planning and Marketing Units.

The Research and Documentation was also one of the DBP sections visited by His Majesty.

The Research and Documentation Section is responsible to collect and record all the important literature in the county as a source of future reference.

It is also responsible to implement research on any aspect of language, literature, culture and tradition especially those concerning Brunei.

In upholding the use of Malay language in the country, DBP is also responsible for publishing several books, journals and magazines.

The books published are mainly from local writers who have been identified by the DBP as capable to write quality work.

Besides this, DBP, in cooperation with the Co-Curriculum Department at the Ministry of Education, is also publishing educational books used in schools across the nation.

Several heads of department in DBP briefed His Majesty on the operation and administration aspect of the sections the ruler visited.

The caring ruler also mingled with some of the staff and officers working in each of the different sections.

His Majesty inspected some of the books sold at the bookshop in the DBP building.

The Monarch then toured the storeroom located nearby, which houses most of the books published by DBP.

His Majesty also closely inspected the Balai Sannayuda before concluding the visit at about 11.30am.

Present during the surprise visit were Pehin Dato Dr Hj Awg Hussein, Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, and other senior government officials. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
