KB Restaurant Padlocked As Rat
Drippings Found In Trays
By Liza Mohd
Kuala Belait –
A restaurant was padlocked yesterday morning after rat
droppings were found stuck on one of the lids of trays used to store
cooked food during a joint inspection conducted by the Kuala Belait
and Seria Municipal Board and the Health Department.
The trays were kept in a glass
cabinet used for displaying food to customers.
Following the inspection, the
restaurant was ordered to close temporarily due to unsatisfactory
cleanliness.
The restaurant managed by an Indian
national at Jalan Mckeran in Kuala Belait was ordered to stay shut for
two weeks commencing today until cleaning works are carried out to the
level stipulated by Health Department and Municipal Board.
It was learnt that the restaurant's
management had allegedly refused to cooperate on cleanliness as ordered by the
Health Department since February this year.
Yesterday's inspection found that the
condition of the kitchen area up to the dining hall had not reached
the level of cleanliness set by the authorities.
In addition, the refrigerator used
for the conservation of fresh foods had exceeded the limit with regard
to health and freshness of food.
Dustbins were left open in the
kitchen area. Onions as well as other cooking equipment were left on
the floor, leaving them exposed to rats and cockroaches. The floor was
wet and the toilet was dirty.
The Health Department said although
advice and reminders had been issued to the restaurant's manager after
three inspections, the condition of the restaurant remained below
satisfactory and stern action had to be taken to safeguard customers'
health.
The Health Department also
highlighted the disappointing state of employees who prepared food in
the restaurant.
The routine inspection was done in
line with the efforts of the Health Department to pay close attention
to public complaints regarding cases of unsatisfactory food
cleanliness and preparation. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
