Nepalese Traditional Kukri In Use Here

Kuala Belait – Kukri, a traditional weapon of the Nepalese, has been in use in the Sultanate since time immemorial.

The curved shaped knife is not only used for special occasions but also in daily life.

The traditional knife, that had existed since the 18th century, has over four types and all of them look alike but different in cover designs.

The size and weight of the knife vary depending on order requirements.

The knife is normally used during traditional tournaments, Nepalese religious ceremonies and for daily activities like cutting wood and slaughtering animals.

The kukri is very much used in the Army, especially on duty in the jungle and for ceremonial occasions.

According to Gurkha army personnel, who have been in the country for nearly two years, the kukri is used by every tribe in Nepal.

Mr Sajan, who spoke Malay fluently, said he is not sure about the origin of the knife.

According to him, the knife has been used since the 18th century and it has gone through many changes since then.

Mr Sajan said the size and design vary depending on order.

Aside from being used in the army, the weapon can also become personnel collection.

Some of the knives are only used once a year. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
