Livestock Production Set To Hit $600 Million By 2023

Bandar Seri Begawan – By the year 2023, the local production of livestock will reach the targeted output levels of 40,000 metric tonnes of chicken meat, 120,000 metric tonnes of table eggs and 600 metric tonnes of red meat.

The value of livestock commodities is estimated at B$600 million by 2023.

The targets are based on a drafted grand strategic plan "Agro Vision 2023" adopted by the Agriculture Department.

The strategic plan could propel the agricultural sector from a primarily commodity- based sector towards a modern agribusiness setting with greater reliance on agro-food processing as well as trading of agro-commodities, agricultural products and processed agro-food.

The strategies adopted are to continue building the capacity of the agricultural sector and fostering public and private sector participation in modernising the local agriculture and agribusiness, developing markets and marketing networks for the local agricultural produce and agro-foods and facilitating the flow of capital and investments into the agricultural sector to develop the local agribusiness.

The strategies are expected to sustain a growth rate of between five to ten per cent annually for the primary agricultural production.

The targets for the local crop production are 58,000 metric tonnes of vegetables, 25,000 metric tonnes of fruits and 900 metric tonnes of rice.

These outputs from crop production are estimated to be worth B$267 million.

It is noted that a rapid growth rate for egg production would be necessary to support the development of local egg processing industry while other raw-agro commodities will be imported at world competitive prices from the nearby agrarian countries and beyond. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
