By Malai FadleyRizal & Rol Ezam

Bandar Seri Begawan - A 35-year-old Permanent Resident was fined $950 or a month's jail in default for conveying 13 plastic containers of Regular gasoline.

Omar bin Hj Abu Bakar pleaded guilty to conveying the undeclared gasoline equivalent to 263.88 litres in his car at Ujung Jalan, Sungai Pandaruan in Temburong on March 10.

Pg Abdullah Pg Hj Matahir, Customs Prosecuting Officer, told the court that a group of Customs Preventive personnel tried to apprehend the defendant when he was about to board a ferry.

However, the defendant attempted to escape by reversing his car and driving away in the opposite direction.

He was later successfully arrested.

Customs personnel, who were acting on a tip-off, detained the defendant for further investigation.

Omar revealed that he had bought the gasoline for $95 from a petrol station in Bangar, Temburong for his relatives in Limbang, who had promised him RM$5 for the help.

The defendant also admitted that this was his third time doing so in March this year.
