Korean Jailed In Labuan For Human
Trafficking
Kuala Lumpur -
A 45-year-old South Korean man was sentenced to 10 months' jail
by the Labuan Sessions Court Monday after he pleaded guilty to
abetting to bring in eight Chinese women illegally by using false
travel documents, The Star reported.
The Labuan Sessions Court also
sentenced the eight women, aged between 20 and 25, to six months' jail
for carrying tampered South Korean passports.
Datuk
Ishak Mohamed, Immigration Department Enforcement Director, said the
group was arrested earlier this month in Labuan after officials
discovered that the women, who were in possession of tampered South
Korean passports, used Labuan to enter Brunei and then leave for a
Western country.
"On March 2, immigration officials
arrested six women from China who were leaving for Brunei at the
Labuan jetty.
“We suspected they had an agent and
two days later officials arrested the Korean man and two more Chinese
women,” he said
"This is a major success for the
department because for the first time we are able to convict an agent
of a human trafficking syndicate," he added. --
