Three Locals Get Japanese Scholarship
By James Kon

Bandar Seri Begawan - Three lucky locals have been awarded the rare opportunity of studying in Japan on a scholarship starting April 4 this year.

The three are: Dayang Najimina Fairuz binti Abd Latif, Awang Mohd Afi Khafiezan bin Abd Kadir and Dayang Anitasartini Binti Haji Tarip.

The trio was picked from thousands of applicants around the world after they had passed the entrance examination and interview.

Dayang Najimina Fairuz and Awang Mohd Afi Khafiezan, both graduates from Maktab Duli, are excited to be able to study in Japan.

Dayang Najimina Fairuz, who will attend an international relations course at Japan's Osaka University of Foreign Studies, has always been fascinated with Japan.

She said that she had heard so much about Japan from her best friend, who visited the land of the rising sun during a student exchange programme.

She would love to visit the many museums and watch the cultural shows in Japan while studying there.

Awang Mohd Afi, on the other hand, who already has friends in Japan, will be attending the Technical College of Japan Electronic College for three years.

He hopes that he can cope with life in Japan and he would love to get a chance to visit Disneyland.

Meanwhile, Dayang Anitasartini, a teacher, will be studying at the Science of Teaching and Learning Graduates, School of Education, Yamashi.

Her interest in Japan came about after attending the numerous introductions to Japan presentations made by Miss Minako, a Japanese language teacher in UBD. Miss Minako had encouraged Dayang Anitasartini to apply for the scholarship.

Yesterday the Japanese Ambassador to Brunei, Nisaka Yoshinobu, hosted a farewell lunch for the students at the Takara Restaurant.

Nisaka Yoshinobu said he is delighted that Brunei students will be able to study in Japan.

He added that the fundamentals of strengthening ties between two countries are the exchange of people because the direct exchange of people will help both countries to better understand each other.

The Japanese ambassador hoped that the students would be able to visit some of the interesting tourist sites in Japan.

He disclosed that last year around 43 Bruneian students went to Japan to further their studies. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
