Sultan Lauds Close Brunei-Laos
Ties
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - His Majesty the Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei
yesterday said that relations between Brunei Darussalam and the Lao
People's Republic are purposeful and practical benefiting both partners
in closely involving themselves in bold plans for the future offered by
the Asean regional association.
|
The ties, at the same time, are also
warm and personal.
In delivering his titah at a banquet in honour
of Mr. Bounnhang Vorachith, Prime Minister of the Lao People's
Democratic Republic, last night at the Istana Nurul Iman, His
Majesty said that at a formal level, His Majesty believes
both countries are making sound progress together.
"We have been very pleased to see
a number of your students here especially those involved in the
training available through our technical assistance programme
under the initiative for Asean integration.
"Our joint commission also
provides a practical way for us to share ideas and put forward new
proposals. I hope it will continue to do this.
"There is much more for it to
consider, particularly trade and investment opportunities,
continued cooperation in education and culture and in the
development of our tourism industries," the Sultan said.
His Majesty also said that Brunei
is delighted to work with a government so ready and willing to
join its neighbours in close cooperation and to play its own part
in the development of Southeast Asia. |

The monarch warmly congratulated the
premier on his country's achievements in the years since Laos
joined Asean.
His Majesty also hailed
the premier on the leadership he has personally provided to both
countries over the past year and his excellent chairmanship of the
meetings.
"As well as working together as
members of Asean, we are also developing much-valued bilateral
relations. This is especially so in what are often referred to as
people-to-people contacts. |
"Ever since 1998, when I had the
pleasure of visiting Laos and the honour of receiving your president
here, this is what we have tried to encourage most of all. In Brunei,
we strongly believe these are the basis upon which lasting good
relations are founded," the Sultan said.
His Majesty added that it is this
that gives human warmth and understanding to the many formal documents
we sign as governments.
Whether they are developed through
cultural activities, sporting events or in day-to-day business and
commercial affairs, they are the flesh and blood of a truly vital
relationship.
"I am very happy to see them growing
between our people," the monarch added.
Meanwhile, Mr Bounnhang Vorachith in
his return speech thanked the Brunei government for helping Laos
especially in human resource development and helping his government
staff study English literature and computer in Brunei.
He also thanked Brunei for the warm
cooperation and friendship between the two countries.
The premier
called on Brunei investors to take the opportunity to invest in Laos.
