Canadian Pianist Captures Brunei Audience

Bandar Seri Begawan - As the first foreigner to perform in the new Radio and Television Brunei (RTB) Hall, Canadian concert pianist Dr Roger Lord Wednesday mesmerised his audience with his talent and dexterity.

In a two-hour concert, Lord delivered his special repertoire for Brunei comprising famous composers from France, Canada, USA-Louisiana, Brunei, Vietnam, Cambodia and. China.

In the first part of the programme, Lord took his audience through the history of music with pieces by Jean-Philippe Rameau in the 1700's to the famous Claire de lone by Claude Debussy followed by Vietnamese popular melodies by Nguyen Van Ty.

After playing the Valse de Salon by Calixa Lavallee, the great Canadian musician who composed the National Anthem `O Canada', Lord took the audience to travel from his hometown in Maritime Canada to USA Louisiana.

Roger Lord launched the second part of the programme with a mezzo forte duet with his adopted Bruneian protegee Timothy Chua, who played with him three Brunei-fold melodies - Kampong Ayer, Lela Menchanai and Lumut Lunting.

After the thunderous applause, Roger brought the crowd to an even higher crescendo with his piano rendition of `La Rose de Phnom Penh' composed by King Norodom Sihanouk of Cambodia. It was Roger's premiere performance on four pieces. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
