Consumer Rights Top CAB Annual
Meet
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Various suggestions to protect consumer rights in the
face of global markets and new technologies will top the agenda of the
Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Consumers Association of Brunei (CAB)
to be held at the Royal Brunei Golf Club in Berakas on March 26.
Pg Shahminan Pg Hj Ismail, CAB Acting
Executive Secretary General, told the Bulletin that the association
will touch on the varying prices of items at village groceries.
The discussion of grocery items will
be based on complaints received from local consumers in the Sultanate
as well as consumer issues such as insurance and hire purchase
agreements.
"The local consumer movement faces
new challenges as we witness the growth of e-commerce and cross-border
retailing, and the impact of global trade regulations to local
consumers.
"Therefore, the need for new
approaches to consumer protection may be necessary. It is time to take
stock and ask what has worked best for consumers in the past, what
works now and what will work in the future," he said.
At the AGM, the post of president -
currently held by Hj Shadoon bin Hj Lamzi - is up for grab. However,
it is not clear whether he would be challenged by a fresh leader or
not.
As stated in the constitution, the
president-elect shall appoint members of an executive committee to
lead the association for another four year.
The executive secretary general and
the treasurer general will also present their reports which will be
agreed upon by members, before being submitted to the Registrar of
Societies.
Pg Shahminan has invited all members
to attend the AGM. --
