Manggis Players Win Top Spinning Contest

Bandar Seri Begawan - Top spin players from Manggis beat their Sengkurong opponents 5-0 in a competition recently held at Jalan Muara.

It was attended by Pehin Dato Hj Zakaria, Minister of Communications; Japar Bangkol, the Director of Youth and Sports; and, Dato Hj Yaakub Hj Ahmad.

The contest, participated by 40 players, was organised by the Brunei Darussalam National Top Spinning Federation (PERGAB) for 2004 to 2005 in a Palu Kampung category.

Hj Ibrahim Lakim, Chairman, thanked Pehin LauAh Kok, Koperasi TIBA, Pehin Dato Hj Ahmad Wally Skinner and the Head of Tourism Unit for their sponsorships, which are regarded as vital in keeping the traditional sporting event alive.

Known locally as Gasing, the game used to be one of the Sultanate's favourite and most competitive pastimes.

A spin top fashioned from local hardwood could weigh up to 5.5kg. Spinning them takes enormous skill, dexterity, coordination and strength. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
