Day
By Sonia K
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Brunei along with the rest of the world celebrated
World Forestry Day 2005 on Monday.
The community programme was organised
by the Forestry Department every year since 1983 with the aim of
instilling and increasing social awareness about the important roles
that are played by the primary forest for the well being of our lives.
Present at the event as guest of
honour was Haji Mohd Hamid bin Haji Mohd Jaafar, Permanent Secretary
at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resources.
It was held at the Bukit Patoi
Forestry Recreation Park in the Temburong District.
Also present were the Temburong
District Acting Officer, heads of department under the Ministry of
Industry and Primary Resources, heads of sections of agencies in the
Temburong District, private sector, penghulus and heads of villages in
the Temburong District as well as officers and staff of the Forestry
Department.
The ceremony began with a speech
delivered by Haji Saidin bin Salleh, the Forestry Director.
In his speech, he mentioned that the
aim of remembering and launching World Forestry Day every year is to
create awareness among ourselves as well as within the society to
appreciate and not to conduct unregulated exploitation of the forest
as well as not to waste the forest to build unplanned infrastructure.
This was then followed by a speech
delivered by the guest of honour.
He highlighted that the Temburong
District is a district that is very important in terms of preserving
the environment.
He also mentioned that the Ulu
Temburong National Park is a much popular destination not only for
tourists but also for many foreign leaders.
The theme for this year's event is
"Forest: Our Pride", which is aimed at conveying two important
messages or visions.
Firstly, as a sign of acknowledging
the forestry reserve policy that has been achieved up to this point
with successfully preserving 78 per cent of the forests covering
Brunei's land.
Secondly, it acts as stimulation for
the department to better encourage restoration policy and
reforestation management based on concrete forestry management. --
