Three Bangladeshis And A Thai Jailed, Caned

Bandar Seri Begawan - Three Bangladeshis and a Thai national were sentenced to three months' jail and three strokes of the cane after they pleaded guilty to violating an Imnimigration Act before the Bandar Magistrate's Court yesterday.

Bangladesh nationals, 33-year-old Md Anwarul Haque, 45-year-old Mohammad Dulal, and 35-year-old Thai, Kiang Homwong, admitted to overstaying in the country after the expiry of their employment passes.

Meanwhile, Bangladeshi Mona Asanullah, 34, pleaded guilty to entering the country illegally.

Moharefandi Hj Md Tahir, Immigration Prosecuting Officer, told the court that all the defendants were apprehended at a rented house in Kampong Belingus in Temburong on March 19 except for Kiang Homwong, who was detained at a rented house in Kampong Amo `A' on the same night.

Personnel who conducted the raid at the two locations brought in the defendants for further investigation on suspicion that they had violated immigration rules. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
