Water Bills Of Delinquent
Customers Reach $1.5 Million
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Brunei recorded a total of $1.5 million worth of
outstanding water bill payments in 2004.
Despite numerous efforts to make bill
payments easier, a number of customers still do not settle their
payments by the due dates.
As part of the activities to mark
World Water Day, the Water Services Department is offering incentives
for customers who clear all outstanding payments on their water bill.
According to the Water Services
Department, the first few customers at the bill payment counters
yesterday were given souvenirs after paying their bill.
In 1999, the Water Services
Department introduced a number of schemes to make bill payment easier
for customers.
The Integrated Billing System was
introduced where electrical and water bills were integrated into one
bill.
Over $723,000 were collected from
water bill payments in 2004.
The department also introduced a
pilot project in 1999, in which hand-held electronic metres was used
to print household water and electricity bills instantly.
Water usage is charged at a rate of
50 cents per 55 cubic metres.
The department told Radio Television
Brunei (RTB) that the monthly water bill for an average household is
between $20 to $30.
However, a large portion of water
bills remain unpaid. --
