‘Antony And Cleopatra’ Performed
At Maktab Duli
By Helena M Mahathir
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Sixth form English Literature students of Maktab Duli
Pengiran Muda Hj Al-Muhtadee Billah recently performed a play entitled
'Antony and Cleopatra' for their fellow students and teachers during
an assembly held at the college's auditorium to mark the start of the
first term school holidays.
Directed by Mr Derbyshire and Ms
Hannah Ho, English Literature teachers from the college, 'Antony and
Cleopatra' is one of Shakespeare's well-known tragedies.
The play aimed to create a deeper
understanding of the story, especially amongst English Literature
students, which in turn will assist them in upcoming examinations.
It is also hoped that the play will
generate a deeper interest amongst students of the college in English
Literature and what it has to offer.
The play was also special for
students this year as Mr Derbyshire will be leaving for his home
country for good after many years of teaching in the Sultanate.
Mr
Derbyshire gave a farewell speech during the assembly while students
expressed their gratitude for the knowledge and guidance he shared
with them over the years.
The spectacular play tells the story
of Mark Antony, a Roman military leader and triumvir, who is
desperately in love with Cleopatra, Queen of Egypt and former mistress
of Julius Caesar.
The principal source of the play is
Sir Thomas North's Parallel Lives, an English version of Plutarch's
Bioi paralleloi.
Written about ten years after Julius
Caesar, 'Antony and Cleopatra' portrays actual events and persons from
Roman history and embodies the love story between its title
characters.
It is considered one of Shakespeare's
richest and most moving works. --
