Volunteer Course
By Azaraimy HH
Bandar Seri
Begawan - More than 50 Mukim Berakas B residents Sunday showed
up for a briefing on the first ever Bomba Volunteer Course.
The Department of Fire Services
organized the course.
The programme will eventually spread
out to every mukim and district in the country with hopes of creating
reliable volunteering manpower in the event of an emergency, natural
disaster or even for communal works.
The briefing was held at the Kampong
Lambak Kanan Fire Department, which will also be the venue for the
upcoming three-day course scheduled for March 25, March 27 and April
1. Meanwhile, the certificate presentation ceremony is planned for
April 3.
Heading the volunteers at the
briefing was Awg Hj Ismail bin Hj Apong, Mukim Berakas B Penghulu.
Awg
Osman Jailani bin Haji Ismail, Assistant Commanding Officer, Public
Relations Fire Services, was on hand to deliver the course structure
and objectives.
He also provided a brief outline on
the duties and responsibilities of the Fire Services.
The day saw participants being
provided with the Bomba Volunteer Terms of Reference, outlining their
extended roles and responsibilities as a volunteer.
The volunteers will work closely and
provide support to the Fire Services Department in preserving the
safety, harmony and welfare of their communities when facing
situations and probabilities of natural disasters, human disasters,
fire and other emergencies.
Emergencies include situations such
as floods, typhoons, collapse of buildings and forest fire, among
others.
The volunteers will also assist in
community works such as welfare works, cleaning campaigns, tree
cutting and forest clearing.
However, the volunteers were reminded
to leave the riskier tasks such as snake catching to the experts.
During the three-day course,
volunteers will undergo various exercises such as fitness, hose
holding technique, marching and coupling. --
