Brunei’s Forest Saves It From Natural Disasters

TemburongBrunei's sustainable conservation of forest has been attributed to the success of preserving 78 per cent of its forest from extinction.

The country's policy of sustainable forest management has helped to hinder natural disasters experienced worldwide from occurring in the country.

Awang Haji Mohd Hamid bin Haji Mohd Jaafar, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Industry and Primary Resouces, made the remarks yesterday at the launching of World Forestry Day 2005.

Awang Haji Hamid said the optimum and balance use of Brunei’s forests is vital in helping to minimise the effects of natural disasters which threaten human life.

He said barrenness is a phenomenon, which is related to extinction of forest.

Other disasters such as flash flooding, mudslide and haze have also caused concern to international community.

At the function, Awang Haji Mohd Hamid officially opened Bukit Patoi Forest Recreation Park.

The winners of logo contest in conjunction with World Forestry Day this year also received their prizes at the event.

Brunei commemorated the World Forestry Day for the first time on March 21, 1983.

This year is the 23rd celebration for the Sultanate and the first in the Temburong District.

'Forest Our Pride' is the theme for this year's celebration, which is seen as an encouragement for the Forestry Department to activate its policy of maintenance, replanting, management and others.

The World Forestry Day is celebrated worldwide every year with the objective of instilling awareness to the community to care for the forest and not to exploitation the forest for infrastructure development. -- Courtesy of Radio Television Brunei
