60 Students Join Discovery Camp
By Liza Mohd

Bandar Seri Begawan - More than 60 Secondary Two students from 32 schools throughout the districts are participating in the OGDC Discovery Camp "Enriching the Mind".

It is organised in partnership with STEP Centre, Ministry of Education.

The camp aims to fill the students' time with functional activities during the first term school holidays and runs for four days from yesterday.

OGDC's head, Neville Petrie, urged participants to carry out activities in a team and at the same time, enjoy adventurous activities installed for them.

On Monday morning, participants would visit the BSP Fire Station to endure challenging outdoor activities and learn survival techniques.

Mr Koh Hong Puah, a STEP official, said the camp has an educational value and he hoped students would learn as much as they could.

When they return to their schools, they would be able to share what they have learned and maybe organise a mini camp.

Through the various activities organised, they will work in teams and be engaged in independent activities.

Such activities organised are the Discovery Extreme (a treasure hunt-like activity which would test a student's physical and mental endurance), Technology Challenge (which will ignite a student's creativity and innovativeness), Water Rocket Challenge (a competition on presentation of planning, design and construction), Sci-Tech Programmes (hands-on activities which include making recycled papers), activities with BSP Fire Station, stage performances and physical fitness and endurance training.

The Discovery Camp also applies the OGDC Point System or OPS, which is a system designed to capture the performance of a team or an individual where points will be awarded or subtracted.

The system will create a positive atmosphere and establish a healthy balance between punishments and rewards. High standards of behaviour, self-discipline and learning should be encouraged and rewarded whenever possible.

The OPS would provide incentives for participants and would be a motivational force to promote self-discipline and team work.

Through previous experiences, the participants acquire leadership, communication skills and learn to appreciate the value of teamwork.

The participants will also be awarded with special prizes for their exemplary leadership quality, outstanding creativity and talent during the closing ceremony on Tuesday morning. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
