Mobile Users Warned Against Phone
Viruses
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Local experts warned of viruses that may attack
mobile phones, especially nowadays where phone manufacturers are able
to come up with more and more innovative products with extra
capabilities.
They said one of the viruses is
SYMBOL_QDIAL.A, a trojan that arrived as a cracked version of the
popular mobile game Mosquitos.
It will send SMS messages to others
from the user's phone book. As a result, users are charged for the
messages without their knowledge.
"Imagine if you have 500 to 1,000
names in your phone directory. The virus is able to send messages to
all of them, including overseas numbers which will cause a fortune to
the owner," they said.
The solution is to delete all numbers
in the directory and keep phone numbers the old fashion way; using
pocket notebook.
Another phone virus, SYMBOS_SKULL.A,
is a theme manager for Nokia 7610 mobile phones.
It disables applications aid changes
application icons with an image of a skull, "This one does not hit
users in the pocket but it is still annoying, they said.
Meanwhile, TROJ-DELF.HA, uses an
infected computer to send out spam messages to mobile phones via SMS.
"SYMBOS CABIR.A was designed for
Symbian smart phones. It arrives as a SIS file, installs itself in an
application folder and can replicate via Bluetooth, which makes mobile
battery runs out quickly," they added.
They said the growing threat comes
from hackers who wanted to show off their skills by creating a major
impact. --
