Brunei Citizenship Awarded To 445

Begawan – New citizens in the Sultanate have been urged to take
active role and responsibility to adopt themselves with the culture
and the social life that have been practised daily in the country.

Awang Haji Idris bi Haji Belaman, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry
of Home Affairs, issued this appeal yesterday at a presentation
ceremony of certificates of citizenship to applicants pertaining to
Chapter six of the Citizenship Act.
“This can be done with the
cooperation of leaders such as Penghulus or village headmen in the
prevention of any undesirable elements,” he said.
The Permanent Secretary further said
that the new citizens also need to interact with neighbours and the
community as well as take part in any welfare activities.

Awang Haji Idris went on to say that such efforts could strengthen and
further enhance the unity and cooperation between the rakyat and
residents in the country.
A total of 445 children including 259
boys received their certificates during the ceremony yesterday.
The granting of citizenship to an
individual means the gift of sovereignty of Brunei.
Once an individual becomes His
Majesty's subject, he or she has the right to a number of privileges
pertaining to the country's laws, politics, and economy.
His Majesty's government has awarded
these certificates of citizenship to new citizens.
A total of 445 citizenship
certificates were issued by the Immigration and National Registration
Department.
Of the number, 303 applicants
received their citizenship certificates in the afternoon.
The 259 male and 186 female
applicants received their citizenship certificates.
All of them expressed their high
appreciation to His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei for accepting them as
citizens.
They also expressed their readiness
to serve the country to the best of their abilities as well as obey
the Sultanate's laws and regulations.
More than 150 recipients were
children below the age of 12.
Their parents also expressed their
appreciation after their children were admitted as citizens of His
Majesty and ensure their children would contribute to the development
of the nation in the future.
Earlier, a series of talks for the
recipients were held yesterday.
The talks touched on the Citizenship
Affairs, Registration of National Identity Cards, Passport and Travel
Document as well as Birth and Death and Adoption Registration.
It was delivered by a senior officer
of the Department of Immigration and National Registration.
