Yang Yanyi, China's Ambassador to Brunei, hosted the reception.

Also present was Pehin Dato Paduka Awang Haji Hazair, the Permanent Secretary at the Prime Minister Office.

Praising the performance of the local mass media, the Chinese Ambassador highlighted the vital role the Information Department under the Prime Minister's office had played in nation-building, including the preservation of political stability, economic diversification, social justice, upgrading people's living standards and promoting regional cohesion and greater awareness and understanding between the people of Brunei.

Miss Yang Yanyi also made a special mention of the local media such as RTB, Borneo Bulletin, International Times, See Hua Daily News, Brudirect.com and other agencies for their unremitting efforts over the years to foster, nurture and enhance traditional friendship and good neighbourliness between China and Brunei.

On the media's role in China, she said the Chinese government encouraged the media to play a more active and constructive role in achieving the countries' development goals.

There are over 400 daily newspapers in China reaching more than 80 millions readers. There are more than 1,900 radio and TV stations in China.

In the year 2003, there were 470,000 Internet websites and nearly 70 million Internet users there, she said.

She commended the local media for not only aspiring to contribute to cultivation of sound social environment, harmonious social relations, preservation of culture, heritage and tradition but also to the enhancement of better understanding, mutual trust and cooperation among countries and peoples in our region and the world at large.

The Chinese Ambassador hopes that Brunei and China would continue to strengthen cooperation to broaden the horizons of the peoples of both countries, promote greater awareness and understanding of the historical aspects, tradition and ideas as well as potential and opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation.

She said through the enhanced cooperation, both countries would be in a better position to contribute to the flow of accurate and objective information on major events not only in the respective countries but also the region and the world. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
