UBD Lecturer Talks On Islam And
Women In Brunei

Begawan - A senior lecturer from the Universiti Brunei
Darussalam was invited to deliver a working paper in Selangor,
Malaysia last week which showed that the expertise of local intellects
was much sought after in the region.

Dr. Hajah Saadiah Binti Darn Derma Wijaya Haji Tamit, a senior
lecturer with the Academy of Brunei Studies, delivered her working
paper at the Siri Wacana Ilmiah DAMAI (Malay and Islamic World) at
Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) in Selangor.

Dr Hajah Saadiah talked about Islam and Women in Brunei: Through the
Perspective of Islamic Family Law at the function.
UKM's
Malay World and Civilisation Institute (ATMA) organized the lecture.
Siri
Wacana Ilmiah (Knowledge Work Series) is a monthly activity of DAMAI
which assembles intellectuals for the sake of benefiting their
expertise and at the same time to spread knowledge on Malay and the
Islamic world.
Her paper touched on various issues
regarding the rights of women under the Brunei Laws on Islamic
Families.
It also looked at the background of
Islamic laws in the Sultanate and the rights of women under the
Islamic Families Law; Emergency Acts (Islamic Families Law) 1999.
Various issues were discussed in the
paper especially on the reasons as to why women were not well-versed
with their rights under the Islamic Families Law.
The session was chaired by Prof.
Madya Noor Aziah Mohd Awal, an associate professor at the Faculty of
Law of UKM.
A detailed analysis of her paperwork
was provided by Prof. Madya Dr. Siti Zulaikhah Md Noor, an expert at
the Islamic Education Faculty of UKM.

Dr Hajah Saadiah told Weekend that the seminar had been successful in
providing comparison on the issues raised.
"The comparison is of great benefit
towards research in the area by interested experts in future," she
said. --
