Call For UBD To Maintain Minimum Entry Requirements
By Rosli Abidin Yahya

Bandar Seri Begawan - Calls have been made by concerned citizens for the highest learning centre in the Sultanate, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), to carry on upholding its status as a quality education centre in the region.

Many residents thought that UBD should not be downgraded by admitting students, local or foreign, who did not possess the minimum entry requirements.

"In general, locals or foreigners must satisfy the minimum entry requirements of entering UBD or even any higher learning institute in this country," they said.

"Once in a while, the entry requirements may be a little bit lowered, if a majority of applicants could not satisfy the minimum entry qualifications.

"To allow the institution to accommodate a large number of students for other reasons should never be practised at all," they said.

They said that they fully believed UBD will carry on with the practice of admitting quality local or foreign students to enter its courses.

"Failure to do so may cause a drop in standards. As a national university, we cannot afford to experience that," they said.

A few foreign students had admitted to the Bulletin that they came here to study so they can easily transfer to other foreign universities.

They said if they applied from their country of origin they have to satisfy a horde of requirements, including proof that they can support themselves throughout the length of their studies.

"Chances are we will never be able to get student visas to pursue our studies overseas unless we can prove that we are the children of millionaires," they said.

However, they said that if they managed to come here to study, they could somehow find it easy to transfer to foreign universities after one or two years.

However, the foreign students told the Bulletin that a few countries now only allow for application of student visas to be made at their (the foreign students) countries of origin -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
