Brunei Becomes Unesco’s New Member
Paris (AFP) -
Brunei on Thursday became the 191st member state of the United Nations
Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation by signing UNESCO's
constitution, the UN body announced in a statement.
Koichiro
Matsuura, UNESCO Director-General, welcomed Brunei's membership,
saying the news "will be greeted with enthusiasm by UNESCO's members
and programme partners worldwide".
"We look forward to working together
in areas, including science and technology policy development,
education and communications networking, and environmental and
cultural heritage," Matsuura added.
The UNESCO chief said Brunei brought
"special strengths" to the work of the Paris-based organisation
"through its promotion of sustainable development and cross-cultural
dialogue and peace".
He praised "Calak Brunei" or the
“Brunei way of conflict resolution" emphasising dialogue and
compromise as a major contribution to the promotion of peace
worldwide.
Matsuura said that with Brunei's
accession to full membership, the organisation was close to achieving
"full universality".
