Sixteen police cadets from St
Andrew's School paid an educational visit to the Marine Police
headquarters near Muara Port yesterday afternoon.
The students, led by their teacher Mr
Chong, were welcomed by Inspector Hasman bin Haji Sulaiman, Patrol
I/Investigation Officer of Marine Police, who later briefed them on
the role of the Marine Police in safeguarding the country's
sovereignty.
Inspector Hasman explained that
Marine Police's role is different from that of police on land. Apart
from patrolling Brunei's waters, they also offer assistance to the
Royal Customs and Excise, Immigration Department, Fisheries
Department, and Forestry Department.
Most of the cases the Marine Police
have handled are smugglings of alcohol and cigarettes and illegal
fishing by foreigners in Brunei's waters, he said.
He added that the department is in
the process of expanding its premises, and new buildings are currently
under construction.
Following the briefing, the students
toured around the headquarters, taking a closer look at the operation
room as well as diving gears used for search-and-rescue unit.
Capping off the visit, the students
boarded two Marine Police patrol boats and were taken on a short ride.
