Call For More Dialogues With Legco
Members
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The public is hoping for more dialogues to be held
with the appointed members of the Legislative Council (LegCo)
following the successful session last Sunday afternoon with the
Consultative Council of Mukim Kilanas (MPMK).
Village and mukim residents said such
sessions are important towards improving the socio-economic standing
of the people nationwide.
"We are hoping to also be given a
similar opportunity as the people of Mukim Kilanas.
"It would be great if the appointed
members could organise such assembly with our mukim.
"Then they would know of our
grievances and shortcomings... so we could all enjoy a better life in
this peaceful nation," they said.
The reconvention of the LegCo was
done to provide more opportunities to the rakyat to get involved and
make constructive contributions to the national development, they
added.
Through the LegCo, the goals and
aspiration of the people of every level would be known.
They said the LegCo is the
communication bridge between them and the government.
During the Sunday session, MPMK
brought up some 32 issues and proposals towards the betterment of the
socio-economy of the people as well as the nation.
Calls for more studies to be made on
the latest education system of Bersepadu or Integration; the
re-establishment of religious schools and teachers' training college;
revitalisation of pension pay for retirees; the preservation of
national heritage; the relocation of heavy industry from residential
areas; the abolishment of parking fees at RIPAS Hospital and others
were made to the appointed members of the LegCo.
Last Sept 25, Brunei marked another
momentous day with the convening of the first session of the
Legislative Council in the Sultanate after a long gap of 21 years.
"We are aware that Bruneians have
ways to express their ambitions and resolve grievances. For sure they
will accept the revival of the State Legislative Council (as) one more
layer of forum for them to channel their views and opinions," His
Majesty said in a Titah during the opening ceremony of the LegCo.
"However, the revival of the State
Legislative Council will not jeopardise the peace and prosperity that
we have enjoyed all this time.
Its existence is not designed to
spark chaos and apprehension among the community," added His Majesty.
