Seal Of Excellence 2005 Now Open
For Handicraft Talents
By CT Hj Mahmod
Bandar Seri
Begawan - United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural
Organisation (UNESCO) has opened doors to preserve and develop both
traditional and contemporary crafts through a wide range of
activities.
Among them is the annual Seal of
Excellence that was recently introduced in 2001 and jointly supported
by UNESCO as well as Asean Handicraft Promotion and Development
Association (AHPADA), which is in support of handicrafts as a
significant cultural industry.
Two locals have done the nation proud
by receiving the Seal of Excellence Award in two consecutive years.
Those interested may visit the
official website www.ahpada.com for more details.
Judges, namely UNESCO and AHPADA,
will nominate winning candidates based on certain criteria.
These include demonstrated excellence
and standard-setting quality in craftsmanship; creative and effective
combination of traditional skills and innovation in material, form and
design; expression of cultural identity and traditional aesthetic
values; respect for the environment in materials and production
techniques; global marketability of craft products; and social
responsibility.
Each product recognised with the Seal
of Excellence will be given a certificate and benefits.
These benefits are that recipients
will be able to use this award as a promotional tool to indicate the
quality and authenticity of his or her goods and all will be listed on
AHPADA's website for buyers to place orders.
The Seal of Excellence means to
enhance international awareness of Asean handicrafts, while serving as
a quality control mechanism and marketing device for the promotion of
handmade traditional and innovative craft products that conform to
rigorous standards in cultural, environmental and production values.
