Authorities Dismantle Illegal Road
Stalls
By Azaraimy & Hj Minor Absah
Bandar Seri
Begawan - The authorities took a tough stance on illegal
roadside hawkers, who were reluctant to give up their "businesses"
even following stern warnings from the government, by dismantling
their stalls and tents along Jalan Beribi and Rimba on Monday evening.
It was an integrated effort by
various departments and ministries to prevent hawkers from operating
at unauthorised sites.
According to sources, the hawkers had
been warned several times against setting up stalls along the areas,
but these warnings fell on deaf ears.
Personnel from the Department of
Brunei-Muara District and several other agencies, with the help of the
Public Works Department, in the end, had no choice but to pull them
down.
The operation on Monday involved more
than 200 personnel from various departments and ministries, including
Ministry of Development, Department of Labour, Immigration Department,
and Ministry of Religious Affairs.
Also present at the operation was Awg
Hj Jumin bin Hj Marsal, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of
Development
A recent newspaper report stated that
some of the operators of these illegal stalls were unemployed - young
people, divorcees and widows trying to make a living.
There was, thus, a call for
commercial alternatives from the public for proper relocation of food
stalls to help these hawkers sustain their livelihoods. --
