Mailmen On Bicycles Deliver Mails
In KL
Bandar Seri
Begawan – Although nowadays there are modern and sophisticated
modes of delivering mail, Kuala Lumpur still prefers to hold on to the
traditional use of bicycle, which has been in existence since 1800.
Today, people only seem to see
letters being delivered by postmen on motorcycles or mail vans.
So it is hard to believe that there
are still postmen, who are prepared to pedal their bicycles in and
around the capital, which is constantly congested with all types of
vehicles come rain or shine.
The fact is that Kuala Lumpur still
has six postmen, who find it more satisfying to deliver letters on
their bicycles rather than riding on their motorcycles.
For them, this tradition should not
be stopped purely because of the changes brought by time.
According to veteran postman Abdul
Ghani Yahya, who has been at it since 1966, what is more important is
the work spirit as a postman and not to shy away from whatever
challenge.
Abdul Ghani, who has on many
occasions refused offer for him to use motorcycle, is grateful because
his health is not affected even though he has to work in all types of
weather.
On average, postmen using bicycles
take about three hours to deliver 15 kilogrammes of mail daily.
Meanwhile, Samuri Din, Malaysian
State Postal Manager, said that the Malaysian Post has no plan to
abolish the concept of delivery by bicycle.
However, the enthusiasm among postmen
to maintain the tradition is ever decreasing.
According to Samuri, apart from
bicycles, the Malaysian Post still has postmen delivering mail on foot
around the capital. --
