Crown Prince Tours Singapore’s
Media Centre And Defence Institute
Singapore –
His Royal Highness Crown Prince Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah and Her
Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah
continued their official visit to Singapore with separate programmes
yesterday.

The Crown Prince began the day by
visiting the Institute of Defence and Strategic Studies (IDSS),
the Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
On arrival, the Crown Prince was
greeted by Prof Amitav Acaharya, Deputy Director of IDSS.
With him was Prince Abdul Qawi.
During the visit, the Crown
Prince was briefed on issues pertaining to the international
terrorism and its implications to regional security.
The Institute was inaugurated on
July 30, 1996, and was established as an autonomous research
institute within the Nanyang Technological University.
It develops a community of
scholars and policy analysts at the forefront of Asia Pacific
security studies and international affairs.
From the University, the Crown
Prince proceeded to the MediaCorp Caldecott Broadcast Centre.
On arrival at the Broadcasting
Centre, the Crown Prince was welcomed by Mr Ernest Wong, Chief
Executive Officer. |

During the visit, the Crown Prince
was briefed on the current developments and achievements of the
broadcasting centre.
The briefing was delivered by the
MediaCorp Chief Executive Officer.
MediaCorp features prominently in
the development of Singapore's broadcasting history.
It commenced radio broadcast on
June 1, 1936 and television broadcast on February 15, 1963. |
Today, MediaCorp is Singapore's
largest broadcaster with a complete range of media business spanning
television, radio, entertainment and movie productions, newspapers,
magazines, electronic media and other broadcasting services.
The Crown Prince then toured the
Centre.
The first stop was the Studio. Here,
the filming of various local television programmes are done, dramas
and sit-coms are conducted.
His Royal Highness also had the
opportunity to witness the filming of a local comedy drama.
The News Room of Channel News Asia
also attracted the Crown Prince's attention.
During the visit, the Crown Prince
had a closer look at the facilities and equipment used. One of the
companies under the MediaCorp Group is MediaCorp Asia, owner of
Channel News Asia.
Channel News Asia is the only
television news channel in Singapore with a regional reach providing
the latest in news and current affairs with Asian perspectives and
lifestyles and analysis programmes that reflect executive views and
tastes.
MediaCorp News also produces and
distributes news and current affairs programmes in Chinese, Malay and
Tamil languages for MediaCorp's station and overseas markets.
Channel News Asia was inaugurated in
September 2000, and its satellite network covers areas from the Middle
East, South Asia, South East Asia, North East Asia up to Australia.
Before warping the visit, the Crown
Prince attended a luncheon hosted by the MediaCorp Centre.
His Royal Highness also received a
souvenir.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU)
in the field of Broadcasting between Brunei and Singapore has been
going on for 14 years.
Among the projects under the MoU of
the two countries included drama, debating, exchange of television
programmes and the joint production of television programmes.
Meanwhile, Her Royal Highness Paduka
Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri Pengiran Anak Sarah visited the Singapore
Sports School.
Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak
Isteri’s arrival at the Singapore Sports School was welcomed by Mr Moo
Soon Chong¸ the School Principal.
During this visit, Her Royal Highness
was presented with the School's Corporate Video which then proceeded
with a briefing on the Youth Development policies by Mr Chan Mun Wei,
Deputy Director of Youth Division at the Ministry of Community, Youth
and Sports Development.
The Singapore Sports School is a
specialised independent school operating under the auspices of the
Ministry of Community, Youth and Sports Development.
The school was officially opened in
April 2004.
All the students take four or three
years course, at the end of which they sit for the GCE 'O' level
examination.
Students take up to nine subjects in
the Upper Secondary levels, depending on their sports schedule and
academic achievement.
The school's academic programme is
based on the educational objectives set out by the Ministry of
Education.
The school spans seven hectares,
about the size of seven football fields. It also offers eight sports
activities such as badminton, bowling, netball, soccer, swimming,
table tennis as well as track and field events.
It is the only school in Singapore to
have its own science sports academy offering services such as Exercise
Physiology, Sports Biomechanics, Sports Psychology, Sports
Physiotherapy, Nutrition and Sports Medicine.
The school's vision is to provide
students with the best possible sports training and support systems to
help realize their sporting potentials and talents and to produce
national athletes.
Her Royal Highness Pengiran Anak
Isteri then received a souvenir from the School.
On Thursday afternoon, His Royal
Highness the Crown Prince General Haji Al-Muhtadee Billah visited the
Commando Headquarters in Camp Hendon.
On arrival at the Headquarters, the
Crown Prince was greeted by Mr Teo Chee Hean, Defence Minister;
Lieutenant General Ng Yat Chung, Chief of Defence Force; Major General
Desmond Kuek, Chief of Army; and, Colonel Yeo See Peng, Chief of
Commando.
Shortly after arrival, His Royal
Highness received the salute and inspected the guard of honour mounted
by 28 personnel of the Commando Squadron.
The Crown Prince's visit at the
headquarters began with a briefing session, which was held at the
Commando Auditorium.
His Royal Highness then witnessed a
demonstration of sophisticated vehicles and a display of equipment by
the Special Operation Force.
One of the vehicles involved in the
demonstration was an Armoured Infantry Fighting Vehicle called the
Bionix.
The vehicle was the first locally
designed and built armoured fighting vehicle in Singapore.
Capable of carrying 7 infantry
soldiers, it is armed with a 35 millimetre-Bush master cannon capable
of firing both armoured piercing and high explosive ammunition.
It can reach a top speed of 75
kilometres per hour.
Another vehicle that attracted His
Royal Highness' attention was the Light Strike Vehicle (LSV).
The vehicle is uniquely designed to
provide speed, performance and mobility in any cross terrain
manoeuvres.
It can reach a top speed of 110
kilometres per hour.
The vehicle was test driven by the
Crown Prince's father, His Majesty the Sultan of Brunei during a visit
to the headquarters in March 2003.
During this visit, His Royal Highness
also met members of the Royal Brunei Armed Forces, who are undergoing
training at the Singapore Armed Forces.
A total of 24 RBAF personnel are
currently undergoing training in Singapore.
With the Crown Prince was Prince
Abdul Qawi.
Before leaving, the Brunei Crown
Prince received souvenir.
During the visit, His Royal Highness
also took a closer look at various facilities and equipment used at
the headquarters.
However, due to security reasons,
Radio Television Brunei (RTB) crew was unable to cover the visit.
The visit at the headquarters was one
of the programmes being arranged for the Crown Prince's visit to
Singapore.
In a separate programme on Thursday
afternoon, Her Royal Highness Paduka Seri Pengiran Anak Isteri
Pengiran Anak Sarah visited the Raffles Junior College.
On arrival at the college, Her Royal
Highness Pengiran Anak Isteri was greeted by Mr Winston James Hodge,
the College's Principal.
The Raffles Junior College strives
not only to provide a first-class education but also to nurture each
individual to realise his or her fullest potential.
Apart from a rigorous academic
programme, the college offers a myriad of opportunities to develop and
express the students' many talents.
The College also offers both Science
and Arts courses.
The Educational Programmes have
academic studies, with all academic matters and staff development and
core programme in GCE 'A' level.
And the Special programmes include
the Humanities Programme, Music Elective and Language Elective
Programme.
The academic achievements in this
college is the highest in Singapore in the 2004 'A' Level results.
Three out of every four students achieved at least three 'A' level
distinctions.
In the co-curricular achievements in
2004, the college participated in 30 out of 40 events and took home 30
medals with 18 Golds.
The college core intends to nurture
thinkers, leaders and pioneers both men and women with
characteristics, confidence and commitment towards leadership.
