Local Speakers Vie At Area K6 Speech Contest

Bandar Seri Begawan - Contestants from The Brunei Speakers' Club, Labuan Toastmasters Club and HSBC Speakers Group on Saturday competed against one another to represent Area K6 at the next level of competition to be held in Kota Kinabalu next month.

The event was hosted by the Brunei Speakers' Club and attended by Zelie Ho, Area K6 Governor.

The topic for the contest was "Tell us about the best speech you ever heard and why you consider it the best", a press release stated.

Speaking first was Arief Putera (LTC), followed by Lim Hui Ling (HSBC) and NurAmalina (BSC). Arief Putera spoke on `Rhetorical questions of interviews', Hui Ling spoke on `Feedback' while Nur Amalina said her father's `Motivational' speeches were the best.

For the International Speech contest, Geoff Andrew (B SC) was named the winner while Melanie Chin (B SC) was the runner-up.

Geoff spoke on the 'Love-Hate Relationship' of mobile phones. With the creative use of his mobile phone, Geoff captured the audience's attention from the very start.

Using various analogies and good humour, Geoff illustrated the love and hate relationship of mobile phones before closing with how mobile phones could have saved lives during the recent tsunami disaster.

Meanwhile, Melanie spoke on 'The Power of Positive Criticism'. Sharing experiences during a hotel stay, Melanie shed some light on how we should accept criticism as a self-improvement tool. -- Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin
