Local Speakers Vie At Area K6
Speech Contest

Begawan - Contestants from The Brunei Speakers' Club, Labuan
Toastmasters Club and HSBC Speakers Group on Saturday competed
against one another to represent Area K6 at the next level of
competition to be held in Kota Kinabalu next month.
The event was hosted by the Brunei
Speakers' Club and attended by Zelie Ho, Area K6 Governor.
The topic for the contest was "Tell
us about the best speech you ever heard and why you consider it the
best", a press release stated.
Speaking first was Arief Putera (LTC),
followed by Lim Hui Ling (HSBC) and NurAmalina (BSC). Arief Putera
spoke on `Rhetorical questions of interviews', Hui Ling spoke on
`Feedback' while Nur Amalina said her father's `Motivational'
speeches were the best.
For the International Speech
contest, Geoff Andrew (B SC) was named the winner while Melanie Chin
(B SC) was the runner-up.
Geoff spoke on the 'Love-Hate
Relationship' of mobile phones. With the creative use of his mobile
phone, Geoff captured the audience's attention from the very start.
Using various analogies and good
humour, Geoff illustrated the love and hate relationship of mobile
phones before closing with how mobile phones could have saved lives
during the recent tsunami disaster.
Meanwhile, Melanie spoke on 'The
Power of Positive Criticism'. Sharing experiences during a hotel
stay, Melanie shed some light on how we should accept criticism as a
self-improvement tool. --
