Officer And Trader For
Treason
By Ignatius Stephen and Lily B. Libo-on
Bandar Seri
Begawan – A top former soldier, an ex senior police officer and
a leading businessman were detained for subversion and treason, a
government statement said yesterday.
They are Pehin Maj (Rtd) Haji Muslim
bin Hj Awang Tengah, Senior Police officer Dato Noordin bin Haji Mohd
Noor and businessman Awang Hj Abd. Radzak bin Hj Awang Damit, who were
held for leaking government secrets in the internet and for treason.
It was also announced that the titles
and other decorations given to the ex-Army man and the ex-police
officer were withdrawn upon the command of His Majesty.
Acting on the recommendation of the
Adat Istiadat Council of Brunei Darussalam, His Majesty ordered the
withdrawal of the title of Pehin Datu Pekerma Dewa bestowed upon Awang
Haji Muslim. Medals and decorations were withdrawn on Saturday, the
statement said.
Haji
Muslim allegedly leaked several government secrets and sensitive
information, which Hj Abd Radzak then used in his postings in a local
website www.bruclass.com.
Awang
Noordin was also stripped of his Datoship and accused of “treason”
against the country prejudicial to Brunei’s security and stability. He
allegedly also sold and leaked government secrets, sensitive
information and classified documents to a foreign nation. The country
was not mentioned.
Businessman Hj Abd. Radzak, the son
of a local bus company owner, was alleged to have actively and
systematically disseminated subversive propaganda through bruclass.
The three were detained following a
thorough investigation. The department viewed their actions to be
subversive in nature against the government of His Majesty the Sultan
of Brunei.
The two, Awang Hj Muslim and Awang
Noordin, together with Hj Abd. Radzak, are now detained under Section
3 (1) (a) Internal Security Act Chapter 133, the statement added.
The Internal Security Department said
their actions incited hatred against the government's mechanism,
making the public lose confidence in the government of His Majesty the
Sultan of Brunei.
“Their actions, which were of
subversive nature, are detrimental to the country's stability and
security,” the Internal Security Department press release said.
Members of the public are advised to
be more courteous and to use proper channels when voicing their ideas
and views. They are also reminded to be more ethical and responsible
whenever making comments and statements especially in the websites.
The news of the detention of the
three comes hot on the heels of 16 others the ISD detained last week.
Accused of alleged subversion and forgery, the group consisted of 13
local citizens, a Permanent Resident of Brunei, a Malaysian and a
Filipino. They were allegedly involved in the distribution of more
than $700,000 forged Brunei money.
