Dodgy Rubber Hair Ties Doing The
Rounds?
By Arnie PDH Ishak
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Rubber hair ties, reportedly made of recycled
condoms, are allegedly being sold by small-time vendors in Brunei
Darussalam.
An email has been going around
warning that these rubber hair ties are made from recycled condoms
and how to recognise them.
After some investigation, it was
found that these rubber hair ties are sold in certain retail and
budget shops here.
It is uncertain if these rubber
hair ties are made from recycled condoms or condoms that have been
thrown away as they were defective and did not meet the quality
standards.
A female shopper who had bought the
rubber hair ties said, "I bought a bunch of these hair ties because
they were cheap and colourful, but a few days later I received an
email from a friend informing me about hair ties that were made of
recycled condoms.
"I was wearing one of the hair ties
at the time and decided to see if they were the same ones. I cut
them up as shown in the email and found that it was in fact made of
condom-like material.
"I was shocked and disgusted and
immediately threw the rubber hair ties away. I would not have found
out about this if not for the email that my friend had sent me."
"I find these bands rather
dangerous and risky as they are flimsy and break easily exposing the
potentially dangerous `rubber' inside."
Curious about these claims, our
reporters procured a bunch of these colourful rubber hair ties and
proceeded to cut away the string holding them together. It was found
that there was indeed a rubber material resembling a cut up piece of
condom inside the hair ties. -- Courtesy of Borneo
