Youths Lend A Hand In Community
Work
By Rosli Abidin Yahya
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Sixteen youths participated in a one-day community
work at Kg Junjungan as part of their two-week Temburong Outward
Bound course, from June 10 to June 23, in their effort to build up
strong personalities in facing challenges.
Supported by the Kg Junjungan
Consultative Council, the event was led by Village Head, Hj Tahir Hi
Jaya.
Also present to lend a helping hand
at the event was Penghulu of the Mukim Pengkalan Bata, Hj Tahir bin
Hj Tarip.
During the community work, the men
were seen pruning and clearing up bushes, trimming grass and
constructing huts, as well as helping village residents in turning
parts of the Kg Junjungan Mosque compound into car park areas.
Meanwhile, the women were taught to
make handicraft products out of bamboos obtained from the Kg
Junjungan.
According to Nursing Officer and
head of the youth participants, Hj Abhat bin Hj Zainuddin, apart
from community works in various villages, the youths will also
undergo outward bound training in Temburong.
"Aside from community works and
outward bound training, participating youths also took part in paddy
harvesting," he said.
Meanwhile Hj Tahir said: "Kg
Junjungan Consultative Council has already drafted some community
projects, which will be held in the near future. Therefore, youth
groups are welcome to take part in the projects."
Awg Hj Taha bin Hj Mohd Salleh, a
committee member of the Consultative Council, said the younger
generation must participate in community projects of gotong-royong
to prepare them to cope with the increasing challenges brought by
globalisation and other geo-political factors.
To cope with the challenges, youths
should not confine themselves within the boundaries of their
youthful world or their villages only, he added.
"In today's borderless world, there
will be a situation where more and more people within this region
will venture outside their countries and work in another country. So
local youths must be ready to venture outside their shell," he said. -- Courtesy of Borneo
