NY’s Herkimer County Community College Another Option Bruneians
By Kartika Rahman

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Herkimer County Community College (HCCC) is located in upstate New York's small village of Herkimer.

It is a two-year unit of the State University of New York (SUNY), the nation's largest comprehensive system of public higher education.

Introducing the college to Bruneians was the Director of SUNY's International Programmes, Mr Tze Teck Sim, at the US Embassy.

It takes approximately four years to complete an American degree.

Colleges such as HCCC provide students with an opportunity to broaden their view as to the options available for degree majors, as well as offering quality education at an affordable cost.

As part of HCCC's Open Admission policy, students from the Sultanate may apply with a minimum of BGCE `O' Level grades. Tuition fees at HCCC (based on 12 to 18 credits) is estimated to be around US$5,330, which means it costs approximately $20,000 for the first two years of going straight into a degree programme at the university.

Additionally, a nine-month budget that includes tuition fees, books and supplies, housing and food among others as well as insurance would come at an estimated total cost of $14,290.

Amongst other points highlighted was the flexibility of HCCC's education system.

It offers 35 two-year associate degree programmes that can lead to an Associate in Applied Science degree. One-year programmes are also available.

For students who are undecided on what major to focus on, HCCC's General Studies programme provides a strong Liberal Arts foundation for transfer.

Young students who have been in Brunei for a majority of their lives would perhaps find comfort in the small and cosy community that HCCC offers on and off campus.

"Our enrolment of 3,500 students means that you will be learning in small classes from professors who know your name. Our students come from all over New York, the USA and numerous foreign countries," said Mr Sim.

On-campus facilities for Muslim students include a place for prayers and the availability of halal food.

Moreover, the Office of International Programmes at HCCC provides a wide range of programmes and services for new students that include free airport pick-ups, conversation partners, and free shuttle bus services to and from campus, host families as well as immigration advising.

English as a Second Language (ESL) at HCCC includes courses in reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as some on US culture and student life.

This intensive programme is designed to prepare applicants for enrolment.
